On Saturday, India successfully test fired the BrahMos, a supersonic cruise missile, from the test range off of the Odisha Coast.  It is capable of carrying a 300 kg warhead with it. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials said that the cruise missile was test fired from a mobile launcher from Integrated Test Range (ITR) at 11:33 A.M., near Chandipur.

A senior DRDO scientist associated with the project said that “It was an excellent launch and a great success.” The missile which is capable of carrying 300 kg warhead is a two stage missile, one being solid and the second one ramjet liquid propellant. The supersonic cruise missile has already been introduced in the Indian Army and Naval services. The Air Force version of BrahMos is still in the final stage of the trials.

Three regiments of Block III in the Indian Army Services are already equipped with the BrahMos missiles. In 2005, the first version of BrahMos was inducted into the Indian Navy with the INS Rajput. It is presently fully operational with two regiments in the Army according to the DRDO.

Two successful test trials of Brahmos missile have been carried out, one from INS Kolkata in June 2014 and February 2015, second is the test firing from INS Kochi on September 30, 2015. These two tests have validated the newly commissioned ship’s systems.
The DRDO scientists are working in the air launch version and also submarine launch version of the BrahMos missile. In the three regiments, where the missile is introduced, two are already operational.
