On Tuesday, the Supreme Court said the parties must make new attempts to settle the Ramjamabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute and come to a settlement. The Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar said that he was ready to be the principal negotiators with the parties chosen mediators, He said he will help settle the Hindu-Muslim dispute over the nearly century-old issue. The CJI also informed the BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy that if the parties wanted any other negotiator from the sitting judges of the Supreme Court, he will make that judge available.

The Court also said that both the parties in the case must adopt themselves to the ‘give a bit and take a bit approach’ to have a meaningful and sincere negotiation for coming to terms about the dispute with each other. The bench made of 3 judges and headed by CJI said that the  judicial order can bind parties but the sensitive matter must be settled through negotiations for better and not only orders. BJP leader, however, said that several attempts have been made in the past and nothing has been resolved. He said that it was time for judicial intervention and to settle the case. The supreme Court asked Swamy to bring this matter to court again on March 31.

The appeals in Supreme Court has been pending for several years after the verdict of Allahabad High Court. In 2010 judgment, the HC said that the disputed area should be divided into three parts. The three judge bench said that the disputed area of 2.77 acres must be partitioned equally among three parties: Muslims, Hindus and Nirmohi Akhara (a Hindu group.)
