WhatsApp introduced a new update on the status bar that is similar to the Snapchat stories. This will be rolling out to the applications 1.2 billion users across web and phone platforms. The CEO and co-founder of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, on his blog wrote, “Starting today, we are rolling out an update to status, which allows you to share photos and videos with your friends and contacts on WhatsApp in an easy and secure way. Yes, even your status updates are end-to-end encrypted.”

WhatsApp, in April 2016, introduced an end to end encryption that maintained secrecy between all the communication between users. Koum added, “This new and improved status feature will let you keep your friends who use WhatsApp easily updated in a fun and simple way. From all of us at WhatsApp, we hope you enjoy it.”

Whatsapp will introduce this feature on February 24, a few days ahead of the WhatsApp’s 8th birthday. Earlier this month WhatsApp introduced the two-step verification feature for all users which adds an extra layer of security to the App. This stops the user from activating the phone number on WhatsApp without the six digit password associated with the App.

The company on the official blog wrote, “Two-step verification is an optional feature that adds more security to your account. When you have two-step verification enabled, any attempt to verify your phone number on WhatsApp must be accompanied by the six-digit passcode that you created using this feature.”

While the company is optimistic about the new update, it is yet to be seen how the users will interact and receive the update in the App.
