Mr. Somu Veerraju, the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) blamed the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government for the Amalapuram violence.

On the 25th of May, Wednesday, Mr. Somu Veerraju addressed the media and said, “The state government has triggered a row in Konaseema where the situation is very tense. Our BJP cadres are neither involved in (the) Amalapuram riots nor did they support any. The state government delayed the announcement of renaming the Konaseema district after Ambedkar. Had it been named after Ambedkar at the beginning itself, the present situation would not have arisen. We condemn the arson–burning of the houses of ministers and MLA. People should show restraint (sic.)”   He further added, “Our party is not averse to changing the name of Konaseema district after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.  However, we are not happy with the way the State government is trying to play the caste and religion card for votes.”

The BJP leader Mr. Somu Veerraju also denied the claims of the YSRCP Government that the decision to change the name was taken after all the political parties in the State agreed to it.

Notably, the BJP unit in Andhra Pradesh clarified that they have no role in the Konaseema violence, which broke out after the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy Government announced the new name for the newly formed district.  On the 18th of May, the Andhra Pradesh Government announced to rename the Konaseema district to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, which upset the people of Amalapuram, the headquarter of Konaseema and people of Konaseema.  A massive mass protest broke out on the evening of the 24th of May, demanding the retention of the original name of the Konaseema district.  To control the situation, the Andhra Pradesh Police imposed strict restrictions and a large police force.  Furthermore, the police registered six cases and detained 46 people, involved in the violence, stone-pelting and setting ablaze the house of a YSRCP Minister and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs.)
