Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) Government, on the 11th of May, filed an affidavit to shift the State Capital to Visakhapatnam.

In the petition, the A.P., Government said,  “There is no basis for the petitioner’s concern over the shifting (of) the capital.”

The affidavit was filed after the Amravati Conservation Committee Secretary, Gadde Thirupathi Rao, opposed the shifting of the Capital from Amravati to Visakhapatnam.  Mr. Rao moved the Andhra Pradesh High Court and filed a petition against the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court heard the case and asked the State Government to file a counter reply and provide an affidavit stating the need to shift the State Capital.  The last hearing regarding the matter was held through a video conference on the 24th of April.

On the 17th of December 2019, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of A.P., announced to have three capitals in the State and introduced a bill regarding the same. While the legislative capital is decided to be Amaravati, the executive capital is likely to be Visakhapatnam and Kurnool would be the judiciary capital.

However, citizens and farmers of Amaravati opposed the bill and protested against the YSRCP Government.

Meanwhile, the bill is also pending in the legislature, following which the YSRCP Government could not shift the capitals until the process is completed.
