AP Municipal Elections Underway, 78.7 Lakh Voters Eligible For Voting

Andhra Pradesh began it’s Municipal elections on the 10th of March. 

According to the State Election Commission (SEC) the polling is being held for 12 Municipal Corporations, including Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and Greater Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and 75 Municipalities and Nagar Panchayats in Andhra Pradesh.

The voting for the aforementioned civic body started at 7:00 A.M., and would continue till 5:00 P.M.

Close to 78,71,272 voters are eligible to cast their votes. The voters would decide the fate of 7,552 candidates in fray for 12 municipal corporations.

The cities of Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, West Godavari, East Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Chittor, YSR Kadapa, Kurnool, Anantapur would go to polls on the same day.

The elections are being held in 12 municipal corporations, including Vizianagaram, Greater Visakhapatnam, Eluru, Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Guntur, Ongole, Chittoor, Tirupati, Kadapa, Kurnool and Anantapur. However, Eluru would not conduct municipal polls on the 10th of March. Recently on the 8th of March, the Supreme Court put a hold on Eluru Municipal elections due to fault in preparation. 

In addition, the SEC established 7,915 voting centres in the State. The SEC appointed 48,723 officials at all centres for the smooth and peaceful conduct of elections.

Major parties contesting the elections are, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP,) the Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the JanaSena Party.

The results of the Municipal elections would be announced on the 14th of March.
