On the 16th of March, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) registered a first information report (FIR) against Nara Chandrababu Naidu, the National President of the Telugu Desam Party. The registered FIR was linked with the Amaravati land scam, done during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.)
The three times Chief Minister of A.P., Mr. Naidu has been alleged of aggregation of thousands of acres for the proposed capital of the divided State of Andhra Pradesh.
The CID of A.P., has charged Chandrababu Naidu for various procedural irregularities in the Capital City Project in 2014. The charges were filed against Chandrababu Naidu as he was the CM of A.P., and also the Chairman of the A.P., Capital Region Development Authority.
The CID registered a case under Section 120 B (conspiracy) and Sections 166, 167 and 217 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC,) read with Prohibition of Assigned Lands Alienation Act of 1977 and the Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) Prevention of Atrocities Act.
Besides Mr. Naidu, P. Narayana has also been named in the FIR. The CID issued summons to both the leaders and asked to appear before the CID.
According to the CID investigation, approximately 500 acres of assigned land had been purchased by different persons close to the then Chief Minister Mr. Naidu. The purchases were made after the announcement of the capital city, Amaravati.
One of the major charges against Naidu pertains to alienation of “assigned lands”, which form part of the aggregated 25,000-30,000 acres.
The notice was issued to Mr. Naidu at his Hyderabad residence on the morning of the 16th of March. He has been asked to join the probe and appear before the CID on the 23rd of March.
