After Delhi, Mumbai and Karnataka, Indian states/cities like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh also reported its first Omicron case on the 12th of December.

Omicron, the new variant of the Wuhan virus, is spreading rapidly in India, taking the total tally to 38 cases.  Besides Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh, Maharashtra and Karnataka also reported new Omicron cases.

The Kerala Health Minister Veena George said the first case of COVID-19 variant Omicron has been confirmed in the State.

The infected person recently returned from the United Kingdom (U.K.,) and tested positive for the new variant.  He is currently stable and undergoing treatment under the supervision of the State Health Department.  In addition, the State Government assured people of all the necessary steps, which they are taking to curb the spread of the new variant.  

In Chandigarh, a 20 year old who was fully vaccinated against the Wuhan virus is infected with Omicron.  He returned to the City from Italy.  He traveled to Visakhapatnam in A.P., to meet his relative who traveled from Ireland and was in Visakhapatnam. Later, he was tested COVID-19 positive and after genome sequencing test, reported to be the first Omicron case in Chandigarh. 

In Andhra Pradesh, a 32 year old man traveled from Ireland to Mumbai and then Mumbai to Visakhapatnam, tested positive.  According to sources, his COVID-19 report came negative in Mumbai, following which he was allowed to travel further.  However, in Vizianagaram, he was tested again and came COVID-19 positive.  His swab samples were sent for genome sequencing and he was reported as the first case of Omicron in the Telugu State. 

In India, states like Rajasthan (9,) Maharashtra (18,) Kerala (1,) Karnataka (3,) Andhra Pradesh (1,) and union territories (UTs) like Delhi (2) and Chandigarh (1) so far reported confirmed Omicron cases.
