On the 28th of September, Tuesday, Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu submitted his resignation. He resigned as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Chief and submitted the letter to Ms. Sonia Gandhi, the Interim President of the Indian National Congress (INC.)
In his letter, Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu said, “The collapse of a man’s character stems from the compromise corner, I can never compromise on Punjab’s future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab.” It further read, “Therefore, I hereby resign as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Will continue to serve the Congress.”
Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu was appointed as the PPCC President in July 2021.
Soon after his resignation, Captain Amrinder Singh Gill the former Chief Minister of Punjab, took to his Twitter handle and said, “I told you so…he (Navjot Singh Sidhu) is not a stable man and not fit for the border state of punjab.”
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claimed the resignation to be an inside rift as the INC made Charanjit Singh Channi as the State Chief Minister. According to the Party, Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu was unhappy with the appointment of a Dalit leader as the State Chief Minister.
The exact reason behind the sudden resignation is yet to be known. The development in the PPCC came at a time when the State was set to conduct its Assembly elections in 2022.
This sudden resignation of leaders including Captain Amrinder Singh Gill and now, Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu from their respective posts, could be a major drawback for the party, contesting the 2022 State Assembly elections.
