The Visakhapatnam International Airport witnessed a severe flood on Monday, the 27th of September, due to Cyclone Gulab.
Due to heavy rainfall as caused by cyclone ‘Gulab’ in Andhra Pradesh’s coastal district, water has pummeled the airport’s entry and exit points, as well as the runway. The water from the Meghadrigadda reservoir, according to sources, has impacted the airport and other low-lying regions. Rainwater has flooded some low-lying regions in Visaka. On Monday, a cyclonic storm swept the Bay of Bengal coast, causing heavy rainfall in many districts of Andhra Pradesh and leaving a trail of destruction in its path.
It is to be noted, after Odisha, the depression from Bay of Bengal, which turned into a cyclonic storm named Gulab landed in the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh. Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna and Guntur districts are some of the regions which have been affected due to the cyclone. However, in the next few hours, the cyclone is likely to weaken into a depression, causing heavy to moderate rainfall in the regions of Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Government announced Rs. 5 lakh ex gratia to the families, whose kin died due to the cyclone. In addition, the rescue operation is underway in the flood hit regions.
