Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding greenfield colonies.

Written on the 7th of June, the letter asked for the intervention of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Rural Development to support Andhra Pradesh in creating basic infrastructure in Greenfield colonies.   YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, spoke about the ” Housing for All’ scheme under the PMAY.  He shared updates about the procurement of land for the Greenfield Colonies under the scheme and gave the construction being held under the State Government.

In his letter to PM Modi, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said, in the past 7 years, more than 3 crore houses have been sanctioned to Andhra Pradesh under the PM Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme.  Referring to the Government’s promise of ‘Housing for all’, Jagan Mohan Reddy said that the Andhra Pradesh Government has acquired 68,381 acres of land and allotted house sites to almost 31 lakh beneficiaries spread across 17,005 greenfield colonies.  

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister said, the Greenfield Colonies scheme contributes to sustainable development.   In order to supervise the development, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government created a new post of Joint Collector – Housing specifically.  The Joint Collector would oversee the housing project works.  The letter also mentioned the estimated amount of Rs. 34,109 crores required for the infrastructure of the Greenfield Colonies.  Of the total estimated amount, the A.P., Government has spent Rs. 23,535 crores so far.  The letter read, “Presently, the PMAY Urban and Gramin programme envisages the development of basic infrastructure in all these greenfield colonies by the state government.  In this regard, I would like to humbly submit that it will be difficult for state governments to bear such a huge cost.”

For the remaining expenses, the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy sought financial assistance for the construction of basic infrastructure for further development of the Greenfield colonies under the PMAY housing scheme. 

The Andhra Pradesh Government launched the Greenfield colonies project on the 3rd of June 2020.  Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy launched the program to provide housing sites to people of A.P.  Under the project, the State Government would construct as many as 28,30,227 houses at a cost of Rs. 50,944 crores.  The construction would be done in phases, while phase I would have 15.50 lakh houses and phase II would have 12.70 lakh houses, which would be constructed soon.
