Days after the Twitter controversy, the Chennai Police, on the 21st of January, summoned Tollywood actor Siddharth.

The case was registered in regard to the recent tweet of Mr. Siddharth against the Indian shuttler Ms. Saina Nehwal.  Recently, on the 10th of January, Tollywood actor Mr. Siddharth, reacted to a tweet, posted by Ms. Saina Nehwal, who expressed concern over the safety of Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India.

Taking a dig at the badminton player, actor Siddharth, who has always been disappointed with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said,  “Subtle cock champion of the world… Thank God we have protectors of India. Shame on you #Rihanna.”  Siddharth was attempting to disrespect Saina in a sexist manner by distorting the badminton term ‘shuttlecock.’  The Twitter reaction gained a lot of criticism from netizens, saying it is not a good way to react.

However, soon after the criticism, Mr. Siddharth, on the 12th of January, took to social media platforms, Twitter and Instagram  and apologized to Ms. Saina Nehwal.

The Chennai Police Commissioner Mr. Shankar Jiwal said that Siddharth has been summoned over his controversial statements.

This is the second complaint against actor Siddharth, the first one was registered in Hyderabad.  On the 12th of January, the Cybercrime Wing of the Hyderabad police registered a case after a woman lodged a complaint against the actor.  The first information report (FIR) has been registered under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of women) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.

Notably, after the Hyderabad Police, the Chennai Police also received complaints against the actor.  Acting upon the complaints, the Chennai police summoned the actor.   According to sources, while one case is regarding the tweet, another is defamation case, both are not criminal cases.  The commissioner said, “We have received two complaints regarding (the tweet).  A case had already been registered over one of the complaints in Hyderabad, the second complaint involves defamation.  We have already issued summons.  Since it is a pandemic period, we are thinking how we can get his statement.”

The Chennai police said, since both the complaints are not criminal cases, but civil cases, they just need to record the statement of the actor.
