With the IMDb rating of 8/10, Rotten Tomatoes Rating of 91% and many other laurels pouring in for it, “Doctor Strange” is fast gaining the spot of THE superhero movie of the year. And the combination of superhero element provided by Marvel and the magic minglings of the character himself, it ensures the film has a following unparalleled.
It doesn’t hurt either that someone that has as high standards of acting as his cheekbones is playing the lead role of the acclaimed neurosurgeon, Dr. Stephen Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch. He is simply marvellous in the avatar of the arrogant yet appreciating doctor who meets with a career ending accident and loses the use of his hands. After being encouraged to move on by the Love of his life, he sets out on a journey to find the solution to his situation. And that is when he finds out about the Celtic monk, the Ancient One. He pleads with her to teach him the art of sorcery. Bit by bit, through instruction and institution, Strange becomes a powerful sorcerer, looking further to bend not just dimensions but also time. He finally meets his archenemy Kaecilius who is out to destroy the ‘Sanctums’ to look for a world where everyone can live forever. The crux of the story is to what lengths Doctor Strange will use his sorcery to defeat Kaecilius.
Without a doubt this film is another gem in the crown that Marvel Comics wears as its sits on the throne of its kingdom of parallel universe movies. The technicality alone leaves you speechless, the kaleidoscopic way of imparting the story. So much so that at a point you are left in a mesmerized limbo between reality and realms. Scott Derrikson has really comes into his own with this one. The only bit of scratch that you find in this Mirror Dimension is with the casting of the “Ancient One.” Many furors were brought forward with Tilda Swinton being cast when the producers could have easily casted an Asian guy. Well maybe they balanced the whitewashing with the gender equality. But either ways, such a magnanimous concept, magical cast and masterful execution leaves you wanting for none. And the total revenue grossed of $ 122 million on its first slot, well that says it all doesn’t it!
