Rs. 10 Lakh Fine On RGV For Sholay Remake

The Delhi High court has imposed fine of Rs. 10 Lakh on the controversial star Ram Gopal Varma and his production house for “intentionally and deliberately” starting the remake of the epic movie Sholay of 1975. The filmmaker was fined for not claiming the copyrights vested with its director Ramesh Sippy.

The petition was filed by Sascha Sippy, son and grand son of original Sholay’s producers Vijay Sippy and G.P. Sippy, alleged that the remake of Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay voilated the exclusive copyright held by the Sholay Media and Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

The Delhi High Court has slapped Rs.10 Lakh as punitive damages on RGV’s production house M/S RGV Production Pvt.Ltd, Varma Corporation Ltd. and Madhu Varma, restraining them from using ideas from the movie or the very famous character like Gabbar or Gabbar Singh in the original movie.
The Court said Varma and others “in the present case have intentionally and deliberately brought the movie in violation of plaintiffs’ exclusive moral rights of copyright.”
