Arvind Subramanian Resigns As Chief Economic Adviser

Arvind Subramanian decided to resign as the Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) on Wednesday. Mr. Subramanian stepped down citing pressing family commitments.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced the resignation on Facebook and said, “Few days ago Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian met me over video conferencing. He informed me that he would like to go back to the United States on account of pressing family commitments. His reasons were personal but extremely important for him. He left me with no option but to agree with him.”

Subramanian is a Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He was appointed as the Chief Economic Adviser of Indian in October 2014.

His term was for three years ending on the 16th of October 2017. However, his term was extended for another year until October 2018.  

The CEA is the chief advisor to the Finance Minister on macro economic matters and primary responsibilities. The Adviser is also tasked with the mid year financial analysis and the Economic Survey.
