The Indian Army is all set to get the first batch of Desi Bofors, also known as Dhanush artillery guns, by the end of March this year.

While the total order has been placed for 114 guns, the first batch of five guns is going to be delivered in Jabalpur by the 26th of March.

“Dhanush is equipped with inertial navigation based sighting system, auto laying facility, on board ballistic computation and an advanced day and night direct firing system. The self-propulsion unit allows the gun to negotiate and deploy itself in mountainous terrain with ease,” the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said in a statement while sanctioning the guns.

With a calibre of 155x45mm, the Dhanush gun is the first of its kind to be used in the Indian Army. With a range of 38 km, it is also going to be the first time a gun with this range has been produced in India.

The Dhanush guns are not the only new addition to the Army. The MoD also plans to induct  M777 Howitzers from the United States of America. Just like the Dhanush guns, the M777s will also come in batches.

While the first 25 M777s will arrive as complete pieces, the rest will come as individual parts and will need to be assembled on arrival.

Initially used during the 1999 Kargil War, the Bofors, with a calibre of 155 mm, were extremely effective in finding out the position of the armed forces of Pakistan.

With the rest of Desi Bofors expected to come soon, the Indian Army has gained quite a great addition to the force. The introduction of these guns could prove to be quite advantageous for the Indian Army.
