On Friday, a father and his son were arrested from Jharkhand for harassing a girl from Mumbai, on Facebook and over the phone.

The police said the harassment drove one of their many victims to commit suicide. The accused and two of their aides who are on the run were also involved in vishing calls, cheating people into parting with bank or card details and using them to swindle money.

“The accused, Arjun Prasad Sahu (41) and his son Sachin (20,) dialed random numbers across India and posed as bank employees. They gathered passwords from people and withdrew money from their accounts,” said the police officer. The accused stumbled upon phone numbers of three Charkop girls, including a minor and a college girl.

“They would speak to them and chat on Facebook. They lured the girls into explicit talk and sent obscene photos to them online,” an officer said. “In one case, they got the girl’s Facebook account password and uploaded images on her profile page.” The girl hanged herself after the incident.

The police traced the numbers after the girls lodged a complaint. A senior officer said, “We suspect others were similarly harassed. We appeal to complainants to come forward.”
