The decision was taken after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) held a meeting regarding the decision of Rahul Gandhi, who wants to resign as the INC President.
Rahul Gandhi, after the defeat of the INC in the Lok Sabha elections, offered his resignation from his post. However, the CWC rejected the resignation and tried to convince Rahul to continue as the Party leader.
The INC secured only 52 Lok Sabha seats out of the 542 seats in the Lok Sabha elections.
The Lok Sabha elections were held from the 11th of April and continued till the 19th of May. The results were announced on the 23rd of May.
On the 31st of May, the INC will hold a meeting with like minded opposition parties and decide about the leadership of the INC. The members of the other parties will also try to convince Rahul Gandhi to continue as the leader of the INC.
The INC will conduct a Parliamentary meeting on the 1st of June, following which, the Party will elect their leader.
