The All Kerala Self Financing Schools Federation (AKSFSF) has proudly declared a one day paid period leave for women employees. Furthermore, the private school teachers’ body has stated that they are open to hiring transgender people in schools.

On Monday, Ramadas Kathiroor, AKSFSF president made the formal public statement at a press conference held in Kozhikode. He stated that this would be executed from August 1 in 1200 private schools across Kerala.

Ramadas Kathiroor explained that the decision of ‘one day paid period leave’ was made as most of the teachers in the private sectors are women. The Federation informed that teachers can take leave on any day of the menstrual cycle and it need not be the first day.

“The social taboo with regard to the menstruation is gradually disappearing. The idea of menstrual leave has already garnered widespread support and now we too have become a part of the movement,“ Ramadas stated.

It is a popular newspaper in Kerala that took the lead and decided to provide period leave to its women employees for the first time in Kerala. But period leave concept is new in India while it already exists in countries like Indonesia, Japan and South Korea.

The another important declaration he made was with regard to the appointment of transgender persons as teachers. If the candidates are eligible, they would be appointed, he added.
