Sunitha Laxman Reddy, a senior member of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC,) is expected to join the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS,) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana.
Sunitha Laxman Reddy met K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana and the President of the TRS, and K.T. Rama Rao, the Working President of the TRS. Ms. Reddy expressed her desire to be a part of the TRS and decided to join the Party.
Speaking about the reason behind leaving the Indian National Congress (INC,) Ms. Reddy said, the Party denied to give her an INC ticket to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Medak constituency.
The INC recently released the names of the Member of Parliament (MP) candidates, which excluded Ms. Reddy, following which, she decided to switch her Party. However, an official announcement regarding the same is yet to be made.
Sunitha Laxmi Reddy would be the 10th member of the INC to change the Party, if she does so.
After the MLAs switched their Parties, the count of the MLAs in the INC decreased from 19 to 11, whereas the number of MLAs in the TRS increased to 100.
If the INC does not increase the number of MLAs, the Party might lose its opposition status in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Telangana.
Telangana will contest a total of 17 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled on the 11th of April.
The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana are the INC, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the TRS.
The results of the Telangana Lok Sabha elections will be announced on the 23rd of May 2019.
