On Wednesday, thirteen families of ransom ware and over 2.3 million infections were detected on Windows in the second quarter of 2017.

According to an IT security solutions company, the malware detection saw a drop of 23 per cent but continued to emerge over 1,700 times every minute.

“Although malware detection on Windows and Android saw a decline when compared to the last quarter, ransom ware attacks have been increased. This trend proves that cyber criminals are working on attacks that require fewer resources but at the same time give higher returns,” said Sanjay Katkar, Chief Technology Officer of Quick Heal.

As per the report, due to individual users and businesses which are failing to keep their systems patched and up to date, there is an increased probability of massive attacks like WannaCry.

“With the advent of ransom ware attacks such as WannaCry and Petya, the attackers are now shifting their attention towards the attacks that make them more money and in an easier way as ransom ware campaigns have higher returns compared with data stealing and other malicious campaigns,” the report stated.

It has been figured out that Trojans have continued to rise with 37 per cent detection followed by Infectors, Worms, Adware and Potentially Unwanted Applications.

As a matter of fact, the report revealed that the scammers have been distributing fake applications by labeling them with famous keywords to make the users download them.

“These apps are mostly developed by novices that are not coded properly which leaves security vulnerabilities in them. These ‘weak’ apps are then used by seasoned attackers to target the mobile users,” the report warned.

The report predicts that the existence and increase of fake applications are not only in third party stores but in Google play as well.
