SC Denies Plea To Cancel Election Results In West Bengal

The Supreme Court on Friday denied the CPI(M) and BJP’s plea to cancel the elections in West Bengal. This comes after a total of 20,000 local body seats are uncontested in the State. This comes as a relief for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as all those seats are waiting for her party members.

According to the opposition parties, All Trinamool Congress members were the only ones allowed to file their nomination papers. The BJP and CPI(M) members were allegedly obstructed from doing the same, leaving 20,000 seats uncontested.

The Apex Court took the allegations into consideration and stated the aggrieved candidate can file a petition at the concerned Court to challenge the polls. The Court stated,“Keeping in view the seriousness of allegations of nominations being stopped, Supreme Court allows individuals to take legal recourse.”

The results for the polls were being held back by the Court do this but will now announce the 20,000 odd uncontested seats results. A relection would be a huge embarrassment for the Mamata Banerjee Government.
