London: A rising star in Britain’s Parliament, ‘Jo Cox’ was shot thrice and stabbed to death on Thursday in an attack that stunned the nation. Ms. Cox, a first-time MP, was a vocal supporter of Britain remaining in the European Union (EU), was shot and stabbed in Birstall, near Leeds in northern England, the Press Association news service reported, citing eyewitnesses.

It is claimed that Jo Cox, is the respected member of the centre-left Labour Party. She won election last year after making her career in Humanitarian work and was respected for her outspoken advocacy on behalf of refugees and civilians in Syria.
Police officials in the northern English region of West Yorkshire said Cox was pronounced dead just before 2 p.m. local time, an hour after she was assaulted outside a library near the city of Leeds. A 52-year-old man was taken into custody, and police said he was the only suspect.
Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said, “We have lost a much-loved colleague, a real talent and a dedicated campaigner for social justice and peace.”
