Doklam: China Starts Constructing Helipads

Today, the Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the Indian and Chinese troops have been redeployed from the face off site in Doklam. However, Chinese troops have started constructing sentry posts, helipads and trenches in Doklam.

Sitharaman said, “Post disengagement from the face off in 2017, troops of both sides have redeployed themselves away from their respective positions at the face off site. The strength of both sides have been reduced.”

Sitharaman was quoted saying, “In order to maintain these troops during the winter, People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has undertaken construction of some infrastructure, including sentry posts, trenches and helipads.”

Last week, the Junior Defence Minister Subhash Bhamre pointed out the sensitivity of India and China border issues. He further added it has the potential to escalate.

Earlier, India and Chinese troops were locked in a 73 day standoff in Doklam. India, on behalf of Bhutan, moved forward to stop Chinese troops from building roads in the disputed area.
