Malala Yousafzai Becomes the Youngest Messenger of Peace and An Honorary Canadian Citizen

Through the ages, we find a phoenix of peace that spread their wings and take over the world under their shadows of knowledge and wisdom. Nineteen year old Malala Yousafzai is doing just that– she is becoming a beacon of hope and peace for people all over the World. No sooner had she received the position of ‘Messenger of Peace’ by United Nations, than she was invited to be an honorary citizen of Canada by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Seems right considering Canada itself is a land of peace and politeness!

Receiving the Award New York City, Malala said that, “If you want to see your future bright, you have to start working now [and] not wait for anyone else.” The U.N., Chief Antonio Guterres also described Yousafzai as a “symbol of perhaps the most important thing in the world — education for all.” She is the youngest ever to receive the position and will be joining about a dozen other current messengers, including Jane Goodall, Yo Yo Ma, Edward Norton, Stevie Wonder and Paulo Coelho.

Malala also addressed the House of Parliament at Canada in the presence of Justin Trudeau and other dignitaries. Accompanied by her parents Ziauddin and Toor Pekai Yousafzai, Malala signed the form as the world watched and applauded. During her speech, Malala was witty and wise, speaking about Canada and gender balance in the country. She also spoke to the children of Canada saying ‘you don’t have to be as old as your very young Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to be a leader.

Only five other people have received the honorary Canadian citizenship: Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, religious leader Aga Khan, Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, and Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Malala Yousafzai, who came to the limelight after she was shot by the Taliban for wanting to study, is also the youngest ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy for education and peace.
