Delhi: A minor altercation between Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and Australian player Sam Constance during the Boxing Day Test has sparked debate. The incident occurred when Kohli, while fielding, brushed shoulders with Constance, leading to an exchange of words. The situation was quickly diffused by umpires and Australian opener Usman Khawaja.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and former England skipper Michael Vaughan, who were in the commentary box, criticized Kohli’s actions and called for the match referee to intervene.

“Constance was minding his own way, but Kohli changed his direction. He’s an experienced player, one of the best. After the shoulder contact, Kohli reacted, questioning, ‘Why would I do that?'” Vaughan remarked. Ponting added, “There’s no doubt about it; Kohli’s movements speak volumes.”

The incident occurred during the 11th over of Australia’s innings when Jasprit Bumrah was bowling. Kohli, while returning the ball, crossed paths with Constance, leading to the exchange.

ICC Rules on Such Incidents

Cricket analysts suggest Kohli could face disciplinary action under Article 2.12 of ICC regulations, which penalizes physical contact made with malicious intent. A one-match ban is possible, though an admission of guilt might reduce the penalty to demerit points.
