A HEART OF HOPE!

On Sunday, a brain dead teenager’s heart was harvested and transplanted into a 15 year old boy. The heart was transported from Surat to a hospital in Mumbai.
The heart travelled over 300 kilometres within two hours.
The 15 year old recipient of the heart suffered from restricted cardiomyopathy. He was on the wait list for transplantation for six months, stated a spokes person from Fortis Hospital, where the transplant surgery was done.
The donor a Kivam Gajera, was 18 years old. He was admitted in Surat’s Ayush ICU, Multi specialty Hospital on September 8th after suffering serious head injuries in a college level boxing match. After he was declared brain dead in the morning, the family decided to donate his heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas and corneas.healthy20140929183555

The heart was flown down to Mumbai by a helicopter and reached Fortis Hospital at suburban Mulund in 1 hour 50 minutes, which is a total distance of 312 kilometers. Police ensured a green corridor for taking the heart to the hospital by road from the airport in Mumbai.
The 15-year-old recipient is now stable and doctors have kept him under observation.
