Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, died on the 21st of May 1991.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Sriperumbudur, Chennai. .
Rajiv Gandhi entered politics in the year 1980, after the death of Sanjay Gandhi, his brother who died in a plane crash.
After the demise of his brother, Rajiv contested as the Member of Parliament (MP) candidate, from his constituency, Amethi and became a Lok Sabha member.
Later, after the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi, he became the Prime Minister of India.
Rajiv Gandhi at the age of 40, became the Prime Minister of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who recently took a jibe at late Rajiv Gandhi by calling him ‘Bhrashtachar No.1’ also tweeted on his death anniversary.

The Gandhi family will hold a commemorative programme to mark the day, which is also observed as anti terrorism day.
The Indian National Congress (INC) issued a statement stating, “The youth and coming generations of the nation need to know the unparalleled and unique contributions made by the former PM. In this context the party has decided to observe the death anniversary for highlighting the vision and mission of one of the most venerated political figures the country has ever produced.”
During the publicity programmes which will be held across the country, the INC will showcase the contribution of Bharat Ratna awardee, late Rajiv Gandhi.
The Party will highlight his efforts and achievements in the field of science and technology.
