On Sunday, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC,) prosecuted three meat stores for illegal animal slaughtering and the sale of unstamped meat.

An inspection was conducted at 11 shops around the Alwal circle and then the prosecution notices were served to them.

The accused have been prosecuted under sections, 539,548,521,487 and 596 of the GHMC act.

Veterinary officer (North Zone) GHMC, T. Srinivas Reddy was quoted saying, “Apart from slaughtering animals in residential areas, the shops prosecuted also had unhygienic conditions.”

In total eight stores were prosecuted among which three were also selling unstamped meat.

This comes a week into continuous raids at several piggery units in R.K. Puram and these illegal units were given hefty fines and closure notices.

This came to light when the R.K. Puram lake began frothing and officials tested the water to find the cause. The Pollution Control Broad revealed that the frothing was caused by dumping animal waste into the lake.

In April, GHMC sent out a notice to all the eateries across the city. The notice informed these places to only use registered slaughter houses for their meat.

After the notice was sent out GHMC raided 69 hotels among which 54 had dirty kitchens and were reportedly using stale meat.

Posh outlets were also not spared from the raid and found Novotel hotel in Madhapur had violated norms and were fined Rs. 30,000. Best Price, a Walmart outlet was also fined Rs. 10,000.

The certified slaughterhouses sell the meat at higher prices which push eateries to purchase the meat from local butcher shops.
