On Wednesday, Hyderabad activists launched a campaign called ‘Save Mecca Masjid’ in efforts to preserve the historic monument with religious importance.

The campaign is working towards restoring the 400 year old masjid. Heritage activists have raised concern about the bad maintenance of the masjid with dilapidated walls and leaking roofs.

Mecca Masjid is one of the oldest structures in Hyderabad from the 17th century. The religious monument stands a few meters away from Hyderabad’s Charminar.

The activists gathered at the Media Plus auditorium to appeal the government to take necessary steps to protect the structure. One of the members present at the gathering demanded the government to sanctions Rs. 150 crores for the maintenance and restoration of the monument.

A news channel spoke to the superintendent of Mecca Masjid, Qadeer Siddiqui who said, “It can’t be repaired right now. They have included the repair of the tombs, under the larger plan to repair the masjid. The government has granted funds worth Rs. 8.48 crore for this.”
