On Wednesday night, a pregnant woman in labor was being taken to a hospital from Lunsapur village in Jafrabad taluka of Amreli in Gujarat. But the ambulance was unable to reach the hospital in time for the delivery as it was blocked by a pride of about a dozen lions.

A 108 ambulance was called by the woman’s family as soon as she went into labor.

The ambulance traveled a distance of just three kilometers when the driver noticed the lions. Amreli Head for the 108 Ambulance, Chetan Gadhia said, “So they decided to stop the ambulance and wait for them to leave. But this did not happen.”

The woman had started bleeding in the ambulance and due to the lions, it was difficult to move for the ambulance. Hence, they decided to deliver the baby in the ambulance. Gadhia explained, “The staff contacted our physician over phone and gave details of vitals. Based on this the physician gave nod for delivery. The delivery took about 25 minutes, and the entire time the lions were moving around the ambulance.”

The delivery was successful and the baby was kept in the baby warmer. Gadhia further added, “Slowly, the pilot of the ambulance started the vehicle and moved further. The lions started to move away from the road and in a few minutes, the road was clear. The woman and child were taken to Jafrabad government hospital where they are currently admitted.”

Lions blocking ambulances is frequent in the village and so, the paramedics are trained to deal with these situations. Gadhia explained, “In some situation, our staff has to walk for kilometers as there is no road for the ambulance. The staff is well trained to tackle such situations.”
