The Hyderabad Police conducted a special drive on New Year’s Eve and registered 2,499 cases of drunk driving. The police released the data with statistics from the three police commissionerates – Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda.
Among the 2,499 cases booked, 1,683 were registered in Hyderabad, 582 cases in Cyberabad and 234 in Rachakonda. The police in a press release stated the special drive was conducted at SR Nagar, Trimulgherry, Abids, Marredpally, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Begumpet and Narayanguda among other areas.
The Hyderabad Police checked a total of 22,540 vehicles and seized 1,309 two wheelers. The riders on the two wheelers had a case booked against them as well.
An Official reported, “Some revelers hired auto rickshaws from pubs and bars instead of waiting for cabs. When we gave breath analyzer test, most of the autorickshaw drivers themselves turned to be drunk. We seized 86 auto rickshaws and booked cases against them.”
The police had earlier informed the public about the special drive and stated there would be severe repercussions for drunk driving. The special drive started on the 31st at 10 P.M. and continued till 5 A.M.
Compared to last year the police booked more drunk driving cases than last year. This year, the police decided to send repeated offenders to jail at Chanchalguda prison for a sentence of one to 15 days depending on the case.
