Vegetable Prices In Karnataka Skyrocket

The last few weeks Karnataka has experienced heavy rains resulting in damaged crops. This, in turn increased the vegetable prices across the State.

The horticulture committees and public grocers in Karnataka expressed the issues caused by the heavy rains.

Marketing Manager of Horticultural Producers’ Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society (HOPCOMS) Gopal Gowda said, “Due to heavy rains across the state, several crops have been damaged. There has been very less availability of everyday vegetables like onions, tomatoes and potatoes, leading to rising prices.”

HOPCOMS is an organization under the Department of Horticultural in Karnataka. On Monday, HOPCOMS listed onions were priced at Rs. 67 for a kilo and tomatoes at Rs. 42 a kilo.

The Central Government imposed a minimum of Rs. 54.8 per kilo as the export price for onions. This move was made after the vegetable prices shot up in the State.

Gowda said, “We are expecting the prices of onions to come down within another 15-20 days with the new harvest expected to hit the market.”
