West Bengal CM Plans To Reduce Unnecessary Expenditure

The Chief Minister (CM) of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee plans to cut back on expenses of various official departments. This move is set to allow effective use of funds for public benefit schemes and repayment of loans.

According to the report published by the Press Trust of India, the CM organised a meeting on Thursday, July 5 to discuss ways of reducing avoidable expenses. The meeting was scheduled after a notification was issued to various departments asking them to reduce unnecessary expenditure. It was attended by Chief Secretary Malay De and other senior officials.

It was decided to reduce recurrent travel of officials, holding meetings in Star Hotels and so on. The circular of Economic Measures suggested effective ways of cost cutting. Video Conferencing for meetings with officials within West Bengal, restrictions of purchase of new vehicles for the Government, constraint on creating new posts were some of the pertinent suggestions.

The West Bengal Government has to repay loans worth Rs. 46,000 Crore and pay Dearness Allowance (DA) of Rs. 5,000 Crore to its employees. The State budget has increased from Rs. 11,000 Crore in 2011 to Rs. 80,000 Crore in 2018. According to Mamata Banerjee, the increase in capital and physical expenditure is a sign of good performance by the Government. These expenditure checks will not affect public schemes like ‘Kanyashree.’
