2019 Alwar Gang Rape Case Verdict Announced, Accused Found Guilty

On the 6th of October, a Special Court announced verdict in 2019 Alwar Gang Rape case. 

The Special Court announced all the five accused of raping a woman, to be guilty. While four of them would serve life imprisonment, the fifth one who circulated the video of the incident and also a minor would be imprisoned for five years.

The verdict was pronounced under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The incident occured on the 26th of April, 2019 in Alwar, Rajasthan.

The woman was raped by five men in front of her husband.

The incident came into light and action was taken after a video of the incident went viral over several social media platforms.

The matter drew criticism from the opposition parties demanding strict action against the culprit.

On the 18th of May, the Alwar Police had filed the charge sheet against the accused.

As per the FIR, four men and a juvenile raped the woman while another man filmed the entire incident. They even asked for an amount of Rs. 10,000 from the woman for not uploading the video on social media.

The accused were identified as Chhote Lal (22,) Hansraj Gurjar (20,) Ashok Kumar Gurjar (20,) and Indraj Singh Gurjar (22.)

All the accused are charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.)

Some of the charges include Section 147 (rioting,) Section 149 (unlawful assembly,) 323 (voluntarily causing hurt,) 327 (Voluntarily causing hurt to extort property, or to constrain to an illegal act,) 341 (wrongful restraint,) 342 (wrongful confinement,) 354B (outraging the modesty of a woman,) 365 (Kidnapping or abducting with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person,) 376D (gang rape,) 384 (extortion,) 395 (dacoity) and 506 (criminal intimidation.)

In addition, the Police also invoked different sections of the SC/ST Act and the Information and Technology Act in the FIR.
