2G Scam Verdict: The Biggest Scam In Independent India

Today a Delhi Court will give the verdict for the 2G Spectrum Allocation Scam cases. The Court will pronounce the verdict for former Telecom Minister A. Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and many more.

The verdict comes seven years after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made its first arrest in 2011. The 2G spectrum scam is the biggest of the century causing the Government a loss of Rs. 1.76 lakh crore.

Everything to know about the 2G Scam:

1. The 2G scam came to light in 2010 when the National Auditor issued a report. The report showed 2G licenses were given away at throwaway prices in 2007 and 2008. The correct method is through a free and fair bidding process.

2. The then Telecom Minister A. Raja denied any wrongdoing. He claims to have acted under the guidance of the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Department of Telecommunication (DoT,) Cabinet Ministers and the then Solicitor General. A. Raja also claims the Nationa Auditor’s report was “flawed” and the exchequer sustained no losses.

3. In 2010, A. Raja stepped down from his position and was arrested in 2011. He is accused of forgery, cheating and conspiracy. The charge sheet also states Raja misled then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

4. The daughter of DMK Chief M. Karunanidhi, M. Kanimozhi is also an accused in the case. The CBI who probed the case found a bribe of Rs. 200 crore for A. Raja from a telecom company was deposited in the account of a Chennai television channel. M. Kanimozhi owns a part of this television channel.

5. Mr. Raja was released on bail after serving a sentence of one year in jail. The Special CBI Judge O. P. Saini will pronounce the verdict today and decide the fate of many politicians and famous telecom companies.
