BJP Begins Its Fight For The Northeastern States Assembly Polls

The BJP has begun its preparation for the Assembly Polls in the Northeastern States. On Saturday, BJP Chief Amit Shah appointed Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as the election in charge for Nagaland and Tripura respectively.

BJP General Secretary Arun Singh in a statement said, “BJP National President Amit Shah has appointed Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State of Home Affairs as Election Incharge of forthcoming Nagaland State Assembly Elections and Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of Finance and Health in Assam Government as Election Incharge of Tripura state.”

Sarma started his political career with the Congress but after last year’s Assam elections he switched sides. Rijiju is one of the heavyweight politicians in Arunachal Pradesh. Both the leaders have played an important role in the rise of BJP in the Northeast States.

The Assembly Elections in Tripura and Nagaland are expected to happen early next year. The previous elections were held in February 2013.

Tripura has been ruled by the Left for the past 24 years and Nagaland has Nagaland Peoples Front in power since 2003. Next year, the Assembly Polls will be held in Meghalaya and Mizoram as well. To woo the people of Mizoram and Meghalaya, PM Modi inaugurated power projects and crucial connectivity just last week.
