The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) removed Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur from the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of Defence for her remarks against Mahatma Gandhi.

On the 27th of November, during the Parliament Session, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur called Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, a ‘patriot,’ which triggered controversy.  Taking action against this remark, the BJP decided to remove her from the parliamentary defence panel and also suspended her from attending BJP parliamentary meetings.

J.P. Nadda, the Working President of the BJP, said the Party does not support Pragya Thakur’s remark against Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation.  He said, “We have decided that Pragya Singh Thakur will be removed from the consultative committee of defence and in this session, she will not be allowed to participate in the BJP parliamentary party meetings.”

Ms. Thakur interrupted A. Raja, a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) who cited a statement by Godse about why he killed Mahatma Gandhi and said he couldn’t give an example of a ‘deshbhakt.’

This is not the first time Pragya Thakur, the Member of Parliament (MP) of Bhopal, insulted Mahatma Gandhi.  During the Lok Sabha election campaigns, Pragya Thakur claimed Godse was a patriot. She said, “Nathuram Godse was a ‘deshbhakt,’ is a ‘deshbhakt’ and will remain a ‘deshbhakt.’”

After the BJP announced it would remove her from the Consultative Committee of Defence, Pragya Thakur took to Twitter and tried to justify her comments.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC,) lashed out at Pragya Thakur and said, “Terrorist Pragya calls terrorist Godse, a patriot. A sad day, in the history of India’s Parliament (sic.)”

The Winter Session of the Parliament started from the 18th of November and would continue till the 13th of December.

Stay tuned for further updates.
