The Government of India (GoI,) on the 20th of November, cancelled the citizenship of Ramesh Chennamaneni, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS.)

The Central Government issued an order which read, “His misrepresentation/concealment of fact misled the Government of India in making its decision initially. Had he revealed the fact that he had not resided in India for one year before making the application, the competent authority in this ministry would not have granted citizenship to him.”

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of India issued a 13 page order and said Mr. Chennamaneni concealed facts about his visits abroad and holds German citizenship.  In addition, the Ministry also mentioned Ramesh failed to meet the criteria to seek Indian citizenship.

In 2009, A. Srinivas, a MLA candidate of the Indian National Congress (INC,) filed a case against Ramesh, stating Ramesh submitted fake documents while submitting his nomination.  Srinivas said Ramesh did not have Indian citizenship and was not eligible to contest the Assembly elections. However, the Telangana High Court dismissed the case and announced its verdict in Ramesh Chennamaneni’s favour.

After the Home Ministry’s order, Chennamaneni highlighted the 2009 verdict of the Telangana High Court and said he would approach the High Court after the Ministry cancelled his Indian citizenship again.

Ramesh Chennamaneni was a member of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 2009.  However, after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Ramesh joined the K. Chandrashekar Rao led TRS.

Ramesh became the MLA of Vemulawada after he won the 2018 Telangana Assembly elections from the Constituency.
