In Tamil Nadu’s Ambattur region, a 19 year old girl allegedly committed suicide, hours after the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) results 2022 were declared.
According to sources, the girl took the extreme step on the evening of the 7th of September, Wednesday, after she failed the NEET UG medical entrance exam After finding out about the incident, the girl’s family rushed her to KMC hospital in Chennai but she was declared ‘brought dead’. The body has been retrieved and sent for an autopsy.
Meanwhile, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC) expressed condolences and met with the victim’s family. During his visit to Chennai, Ambattur, Mr. Rahul Gandhi criticised the NEET UG exams and demanded its abolition.
Furthermore, in Tamil Nadu, approximately 1,32,167 candidates appeared for the NEET exam and only 67,787 qualified. Before the NEET exams were made compulsory in 2017, students who aspired to study medicine were given admissions based on their combined marks of 12th class scores and entrance exam scores from a state wide test. However, after NEET was made mandatory, many aspirants were left with no colleges and admissions in the state run medical institutes in India.
Students who fail NEET Exams either choose a different career path or commit suicide. In Tamil Nadu, this is the third such incident in the past few months, where NEET aspirants ended their life.
