On the 27th of December, Tuesday, the nation registered another horrific murder in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district.

According to sources, a man identified as Shahbaz Khan allegedly killed Neel Kusum Panna, a 20 year old woman, by stabbing her 51 times with a screwdriver.   Although the incident took place on the 24th of December, the incident came to light after the victim’s brother arrived home, found his sister’s dead body in a pool of blood and informed the police.

The Chhattisgarh Police registered a case and launched an investigation into the murder case.  As per the initial investigation, the victim was alone at her residence, in the Pump House Colony of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL,) when the incident took place.  Mr. Santosh Kumar Singh, the Superintendent of Police (SP,) Korba, Chhattisgarh, said, “The victim was alone in the house when the accused arrived there.  He covered her mouth with a pillow to muffle her screams and stabbed her 51 times with a screwdriver.”  The SP further said, “The accused was known to the woman. Investigations revealed that he came to her house for a meeting on December 24 but later, a heated argument took place over the woman’s purported relation with some other person.  Miffed over this, the accused allegedly covered her mouth with a pillow and stabbed her 51 times with a screwdriver.”

The investigation also revealed that the accused Shahbaz Khan is a native of Jashpur district and befriended the victim three years ago, when the accused was a bus conductor.  The victim used to travel by the same bus on a regular basis and allegedly became friends.   However, the victim stopped talking to Shahbaz Khan, which triggered a rage in him.  He even threatened the victim’s parents when the victim started avoiding his calls.

As of now, the police have registered a case under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and launched an investigation.  Furthermore, four police teams have been formed to nab the accused, who is currently absconding.
