Everything To Know About The TDP’s No Confidence Motion

Everything you need to know about Telugu Desam Party’s no confidence motion against the Modi Government is right here. Last week, the TDP moved a no confidence motion against the Center on Saturday. But due to continuous protests, the House was adjourned to Monday.

How does a no confidence motion work?

A no confidence motion can be moved only in the Lok Sabha by a Member of Parliament. The motion will be valid for 10 days within which the motion needs the support of 50 members of the House. Once this happens the Speaker of the House will present the motion for discussion.

What support does the TDP have for the motion?

The TDP has got enough support to have the motion discussed. The Congress, All Trinamool Congress and the Left Front lent their support. This gives TDP the support of more than 50 members of the Lower House. Once the motion is presented in the House it will lead to a discussion.

What happens after the motion is discussed?

Once the motion is discussed among all the members in the House, the members are asked to vote.

Are there chances of the TDP winning?

No, the Lok Sabha has a total of 545 members out of which 274 are BJP members. But the BJP led NDA makes up for another 41 members. This gives BJP the advantage as it controls the outcome of 315 members from the Lok Sabha. TDP would need a majority of votes.

Why did the TDP move a no confidence motion against the Modi Government?

After bifurcation Andhra Pradesh faced a number of problems due to not having a capital in the State. In the bifurcation, Telangana got Hyderabad which was originally the capital of Andhra Pradesh. Since then the Andhra Pradesh Government demanded a Special Category Status for the State. The status will ensure more money is sent towards the State for quicker development. The BJP said it would give Andhra the status, this led to the TDP joining forces with the BJP. But the BJP has denied the status to Andhra after coming to power in 2014. According to the Center, the State received large amounts of funds but failed to show any progress.

The TDP will move another no confidence motion on Tuesday again. The party is aware of their loss at the end of the motion but say this is to scare the Government to change.
