The speculation of her joining the BJP came after she was dropped as the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Spokesperson with an immediate effect.

Ms. Sundar, on the 12th of October, even resigned from the INC and submitted her resignation to Sonia Gandhi, the interim President of the INC.

In the letter she wrote, “Few elements seated at (a) higher level within the party, people who have no connectivity with the ground reality or public recognition are dictating terms and people like me who wanted to work for the party sincerely, are being pushed and suppressed.” She concluded her resignation with, “After a long thorough thought process over a period of time, have decided to end my association with the party.”
