The United Nations International Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF,) on the 1st of January, reported the birth of approximately 4 lakh children across the world on New Year’s Day.  Out of 4 lakh, India recorded the highest number—67,385.

With the birth of 67,385 babies, India beat China, which recorded the birth of 46,299 babies on the 1st of January, 2020. 

Henrietta Fore, the Executive Director of UNICEF, said, “The beginning of a new year and a new decade is an opportunity to reflect on our hopes and aspirations not only for our future but the future of those who will come after us.”

While India topped the list with 67,385 babies, the other countries are China (46,299,) Nigeria (26,039,) Pakistan (16,787,) Indonesia (13,020,) the United States of America (U.S.A.,) (10,452,) Democratic Republic of Congo (10,247) and Ethiopia (8,493.)

UNICEF celebrates babies born on New Year’s Day every year, believing the day is an auspicious one for childbirth around the world. 

Another major  UNICEF research says India would be ahead of China in terms of population by 2027 as India is expected to have an additional 273 million people between 2019 and 2050.  On the other hand, Nigeria is also expected to add 200 million people by 2050.

As of now, the population of China is 1.43 billion, whereas India’s population is 1.37 billion, comprising 18 % and 17 % of the world population respectively.
