Last week, Indrani Mukerjea testified jail officials beat a woman prisoner to death in Mumbai. She also alleged they attacked other inmates including her. The CBI allowed her on Wednesday to file a FIR with police regarding this and ordered a medical examination. The medical examiner concluded Indrani does have injuries on her arms and legs.

Byculla jail officials, however, are set to argue in court that Mukerjea was hurt in a prisoners’ riot that erupted on Saturday. The protest started after inmate Manjula Shetye died, which Indrani alleged was after officials inserted a wooden stick in her vagina.
Mukerjea is among the 200 prisoners who climbed onto the roof of the prison as part of a protest in the Byculla jail in Mumbai. She testified in court on Wednesday that she witnessed Shetye being dragged by the sari that was draped around her neck. She also testified witnessing an assault by officials. Of the officials, six have been suspended and one charged with murder.
Mukerjea was arrested in 2015 and is serving a sentence on the charges of strangling her daughter, Sheena Bora and setting her body on fire. Until 2015, Indrani was a prominent media entrepreneur. She along with husband Peter Mukerjea was arrested. They owned a TV network that they sold in 2009.
Sheena Bora was killed in 2012, but her murder came to light three years later after Mukerjea’s driver was arrested in another case. He then confessed to the killing of Bora and gave details of his former employer’s (Mukerjea’s) role in the murder. Sheena Bora was engaged to Rahul Mukerjea, who is Peter Mukerjea’s son from his previous marriage.
