Aiming at enhanced women’s safety, the Karnataka Government, on February 6, launched a “self-defense training program” for 50,000 students of colleges/schools.

On Sunday, Mr. Basavaraj Bommai, the Chief Minister of Karnataka said, “An ambitious program is being charted to provide self-defense training for 50,000 girls students in Backward Classes and Social Welfare department hostels.  It has been aptly named after Onake Obavva; the name itself gives the strength to fight.”  He further added, “Women have venerable respect and position in society.  But the perverts look at them in a cheap manner.  Many laws have been passed, programs formulated and funds have been spent to stop harassment and atrocities on women.  But there is a need for imparting self-defense training too for them.”

Emphasizing the need for self-defense for women, the State CM said, the rogue elements would be reduced, if women would know how to defend themselves.  Although he appreciated the efforts of the Government of India, law, and order for women, and laws to protect women, he urged every woman to take the classes and teach a lesson to such culprits, offending women.

Named the Obavva Art of Self Defence Training, the self-defense classes would be given at Police Training Schools.  The State Home Ministry has been directed to ensure the arrangements.

Highlighting the importance of the name Obavva, Mr. Basavaraj Bommai said, “We all have read the courageous story of Onake Obavva.  Karnataka is proud of its legacy of such courageous women.  Kitturu Chennamma, Belavadi Mallamma, Onake Obavva.. were more courageous than men.  They are our inspiration.”

The self-defense classes would be given under the Government of Karnataka, to students of schools and colleges.
