After 2 weeks of tension between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu filled with riots,violence and the death of two citizens, the Supreme Court had ordered Karnataka State Government to release 6000 cusecs of water from the river Cauvery on Tuesday.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has decided to wait till the meeting called by union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati. This meeting was also attended by a representative of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha, who is currently in the hospital.
Mr. Siddaramaiah said that his intent was the welfare of the citizens of his State, as Karnataka releasing water to Tamil Nadu, drinking water levels in his State would decrease considerably. He added Tamil Nadu had a monsoon season to look forward to and Karnataka did not have any such luxuries with only Southwest rains.
The Cauvery River originates in Karnataka and flows into Tamil Nadu and water wars have been going on for decades, reaching a new high these past few weeks.
