Kashmir: 1 Militant Killed In Kupwara And 3 Civilians in Hawoora

On the day following Burhan Wani’s death anniversary, police officials reported the death of an unidentified militant. The encounter with the security forces took place in the forest area of Handwara in the Kupwara district of North Kashmir.

On receiving information about the presence of militants, the security forces launched a cordon and search operation killing one militant.

The current death toll is four as three civilians including a teenage girl was killed in Hawoora district during a clash between protestors and security forces against a forced raid that was undertaken by the security forces to arrest the youth of the region.

An order of restrictionsfrom the Government came a day before the Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Wani’s second death anniversary.

Restrictions in Wani’s hometown Tral Township in South Kashmir and Nowhatta and Maisuma police station areas of Srinagar was put forth as a precautionary measure to maintain the law and order of the State and avoid unpropitious situations.

A resident of Tral, Wani was killed in an encounter in Kokernag area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on July 8, 2016. Widespread anger and protests against the Securities Forces and the Indian State broke out in the aftermath of his encounter. The protests continued for four months during which time the Indian state machineries including the Security Forces cracked down on civilians and militants. Long periods of curfews and shutdowns followed.
