Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former Rail Minister of India and President of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD,) was granted bail in a fodder scam. 

The Jharkhand High Court (HC) on the 9th of October, granted bail to Lalu Prasad Yadav in connection with the Chaibasa treasury case.

In 1992 to 1993, during the reign of the RJD Government, the then Chief Minister of Bihar Lalu Prasad Yadav withdrew Rs. 33.67 crores from the Chaibasa treasury. In December 2017, Mr. Yadav was sentenced to imprisonment of 7 years after being convicted in the fodder scam for offences under Section 120B, Section 420, 467, 468, 471, 477(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 13(i)(c)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption

Though the Jharkhand High Court granted bail to Mr. Yadav, he would still remain in jail.

According to sources, Lalu Prasad Yadav is convicted in four different fodder scams. In addition, a trial in the Doranda Fodder scam is still pending.

Lalu Prasad Yadav is serving jail terms of a total of 14 years in multiple fodder scam cases. Out of the five cases in Jharkhand, Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted in four different cases, 2 of Chaibasa, 1 of Deoghar, and 1 of Dumka and a trial is on in the Doranda Treasury case.

Lalu Prasad Yadav got bail in the Chaibasa fraud case, whereas the Dumka Treasury scam and the Doranda cases are still pending.

On the 12th of July 2019, the Jharkhand High Court granted bail to Lalu Prasad Yadav in the Deoghar Treasury case.

Lalu Prasad Yadav has been lodged in Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Jail, Jharkhand.

The development of the Jharkhand High Court in the Lalu Prasad Yadav’s fodder scam case came days ahead of the Bihar Assembly Elections.

The RJD is one of the parties contesting the upcoming elections for 243 Assembly seats.

The Bihar Assembly elections 2020 are scheduled to be held in three phases.

While the first phase would be held on the 28th of October, the second and the third phases are scheduled on the 3rd and the 7th of November.

The counting of the votes would be held on the 10th of November.
