Maharashtra DGP Summoned Over Pragya Thakur Custodial Case

On the 24th of February, the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission summoned the State Director General of Police (DGP.)

The notice was issued over allegations made by Bhopal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament (MP) Pragya Singh Thakur about custodial torture. She alleged DGP Hemant Nagrale of custodial torture while interrogation in 2008 Malegaon Blast Case.

Pragya Thakur is one of the accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case which killed 6 Muslims and left several injured. Though the trial of the case is still going on, Ms. Pragya was granted bail on grounds of poor health.

Aditya Mishra, the advocate representing Ms. Thakur filed a complaint at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) regarding it in 2018.

The case was filed after Ms. Thakur’s appearance in a news television show in October 2018 mentioning her ordeal.

The NHRC transferred the petition to theMHRC for further proceedings and now the MHRC issued a summon notice to the DGP of Maharashtra.

Mr. Nagrale is ordered to appear before the Court on the 6th of April.
